2007 was another very good year for Lonesome Dove Outfitters and their clients. We appreciate all of you who came up and hunted with us. Our spring bear hunting started off great with our first 3 hunters taking 9’, 9.5’ and 10’ male brown bears. Our pilot/guide, Mike Collins filmed Richard Smith’s 10’ brown bear hunt and made an excellent video. Father and Son team, Bill and Bob Jones from Utah came back for the second hunt in May and Bill scored on a nice brown bear also. That gave us 4 brown bears for 5 hunters on our spring hunts. The bear population continues to grow in unit 6 and we are seeing more and more trophy bears.
As 2006 was one of the worst years for weather, 2007 was one of the best. We still had our usual rain and wind at times, but we also had a lot of sunshine. That really helped out the bear movement in the spring and also the early fall. Father and Son, Dick and Austin McKee from Denver came up early in September and took their bears on the same day 100 yards apart. We saw 16 brown bears on their hunt prior to taking the ones they did. Our Mountain Goat hunts went very well afterward with 10 hunters taking 9 Mountain Goats including two archery kills. Joe Bilek arrowed a very nice 9 7/8” billy at 5 yards on his first day of hunting. Brothers Richard and Brad Anderson took two nice billys out of the same bunch at the same time and Richard and James MacInnes each took black bears after their Mountain Goats.
It is still our philosophy to not over hunt our country and keep our bookings limited. This has paid off with satisfied clients and high success ratios. In 2007 our success rate on Brown bears was 87.5% and 90% on Mountain Goats. It was only problems with weather and fog that prevented us from being 100% on the Mountain Goats. We have very limited availability for both 2008 and 2009, so let us know if you would like to set up a hunt. We have a very extensive reference list available upon request. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
