Once again we would like to thank all of the hunters who came up and hunted with us this year. It was another successful year with only 2 clients returning without a trophy. This was due to personal choice as they were holding out for large trophies. Bob Weaver took a Boone and Crockett Brown Bear this spring with a final score of 28 3/16". Mike Sokol took a very heavy horned 36 inch ram at 6:30 am on opening day of the season. It was a 65 minute hunt, but we had located the sheep a couple of days before the season and he really cooperated for us. Ten Mountain Goat hunters took nine Goats with the largest being 10 1/4 inches taken by Al Wynn of Aurora, CO. Al and Steve Hargett also took Brown Bears after their Mountain Goat hunts. We continue to expand our hunting areas and get into new country each season. The Mountain Goats and Brown Bears are doing very well in Unit 6 and the sheep seem to be getting better in most areas of the State. The Black Bear hunting has decreased somewhat especially on the western side of Prince William Sound. This is primarily due to the sharp increase in hunting pressue since the Whittier Tunnel opened to vehicle traffic. We only hunt these bears incidentally on some of the Mountain Goat hunts, and our Black Bears on the eastern side of unit 6 are doing great. We continue to run small camps and relocate frequently to spread out the hunting pressure. All of the guides are extremely competant with years of experience. Just ask our references. This brings to mind a point I want to continue to emphasize, and that is to thoroughly check out your Outfitter before booking a hunt. Ask very specific questions and CALL THE REFERENCES!!! Some of these operators are slicker than used car salesmen and are very good at telling you what you want to hear to get your deposit. Find out also what their refund policy is if you cannot make the hunt. Ask to talk to unsuccessful clients especially. They can tell you whether or not their lack of success was due to their own choice, weather, etc. or if it was due to the Outfitters inability to perform. You can also go here and do a name search on your outfitter. This will tell you if he is indeed licensed and legal to operate where he plans to take you hunting. You guys are spending a lot of money to come up and hunt in this wonderful State, so it is time well spent to research your hunt. I say this because I personally know of several "Outfitters" who have no business booking hunts, and I hear nightmare stories every year from clients who have had bad experiences. It reflects poorly on the entire industry. In closing, I would like to dedicate all of my efforts and success this past year to my Grandfather who passed away on August 30. He was instrumental in giving me a strong love and respect for the Outdoors since I was very young. For this, I am extremely grateful, and I will miss him very much. |
